Do you love homemade banana bread? Me too! Did you know that Maxime, co-founder and chocolate maker at Qantu, identifies it as one of the luscious and characteristic notes of this Chuncho 70% Dark Chocolate Bar? It’s true! I dare you to taste this bar and not find the comforting flavor of fresh banana bread!

This delicate dark chocolate bar with a cult following also has nutty, floral and autumn spice notes. Maxime waxes a bit poetic when he sings the Chuncho bar’s praises, calling it "a heartwarming winter bar, perfect to enjoy by a campfire.” (If you're looking for a "summer" bar, try Qantu's Gran Blanco!)

Chuncho means “wild” in Quechua. The cacao beans used to lovingly craft this bar come from a variety of different kinds of pods that grow on giant wild trees in the steep mountains of southern Peru in the La Mar Ayacucho region. These trees are at least 80 years old, and their colorful pods of all shapes, sizes and textures are harvested just once annually, for a period of two to three months. You can see an example of one extremely tiny variety of a Chuncho cacao pod below. It's very cute!

This bar is truly one of my favorites as it is elegant, multilayered and cozy all at once. Upon tasting this award-winning bar for the first time, my son’s face lit up and he said, “Wow! That tastes like a rainbow!”

The owners and chocolate makers at Qantu are a husband and wife team. Maxime is a Montrealer and his wife, Elfi, is from Peru, where they met by chance as young travelers. After falling in love, they visited their first cacao plantation in 2014 and fell in love all over again, this time with bean to bar chocolate! Two years later they pursued their dream of crafting chocolate from fine flavor Peruvian beans. They selected the farmers with whom they wanted to partner, bought some chocolate-making equipment, and started racking up gold and silver medals a year later. At Qantu, the makers keep heat to a minimum when roasting and conching their cacao beans so as to preserve delectable, fine flavors, and you will be impressed by how delicate and dynamic all of their bars are!

Elfi & Maxine - Qantu

Why the unusual name “Qantu” you may wonder? Qantu (pronounced ‘Kantu’) comes from the native Peruvian language, Quechua, and it is the national flower of Peru and Bolivia. A symbol of unity and hospitality, this flower embodies the values and sentiment that Maxime and Elfi infuse into their chocolate work.
