Fruition Tanzania Latte Dark Milk Chocolate Bar
The Fruition Tanzania Latte Dark Milk Chocolate Bar is a true delight. Rich and cozy, it is one of those bars that keeps you coming back for just one more bite, but after the final taste has been savored, you feel utterly satisfied! And then, before you know it, you’re already dreaming of the next bite! I guess that’s how it is for chocolate romantics when their palate finds a soulmate.
This bar is harmonious. It’s not one of those chocolates that shouts, “Holy Coffee!” when it lands on your taste buds. No, no, definitely not! This gentle bar has a gorgeous balance of indulgent chocolate notes with a whisper of your favorite latte made from the world’s finest coffee.
The beans for this bar come from a village called Mbingu (Kiswahili for “heaven”) in Kilombero Valley, Tanzania. It is near Udzungwa Mountain National Park. Kokoa Kamili is a well-renowned fermentation facility in Mbingu Village that purchases wet cacao beans at a premium price (actually, the highest price paid for cacao in all of Tanzania) from more than 4,000 smallholder farmers in the region. Kokoa Kamili does great work, not only with the art and science of fermentation, but with training farmers how to increase the quantity of cacao beans without sacrificing quality.
Fruition paid a premium for this special edition “Women’s Lot” of cocoa beans so that Kokoa Kamili may help fund scholarships for young girls from the village of Mbungu. This bar also proudly features Tanzanian Peaberry coffee, often called “The Champagne of coffee,” which is roasted locally by Heavyfeather.
if you are a food nerd, like me, then you may want to learn more about peaberry coffee and find out what makes it so special. If you don’t geek out on this stuff, then simply click “Add to Cart” and get on with your day!
Peaberry is not a coffee varietal but rather a description of the coffee bean itself. Coffee is a fruit, and therefore, contains seeds. Coffee beans are the seeds of coffee cherries, which typically develop two seeds per fruit (as in the image on the right). Rarely, coffee cherries develop just a single seed (image on left), and these are referred to as peaberries because they resemble peas in both shape and size.
This genetic variation is a mystery. It could be the result of weather, pollination or plant nutrition, but experts in the coffee industry can neither explain the peaberry phenomenon nor replicate it. Less than 10% of coffee beans are peaberries.
Peaberry coffee is often linked to specific regions like Tanzania and Kenya, but it can develop anywhere in the world, from any variety of coffee. Needless to say, because peaberry coffee is so rare, it is quite expensive. Experts say that peaberry coffee is sweeter, lighter yet more flavorful, and possesses an exquisite, bright acidity. I’m so happy that it is an ingredient in this gorgeous chocolate bar!
