Similar in texture to homemade fudge, this Hogarth Gianduia Dark Hazelnut Chocolate (made with 30% hazelnuts and 45% cacao), is soft, smooth and voluptuous due to the hazelnut oil lowering the melting temperature of the chocolate. When I tasted this bar for the first time a few years ago, I knew I had struck gold and found a goody that one day would be part of the Barometer Chocolate collection. Fortunately for you, that day has arrived!

I experience this Gianduia as a rich, luxurious dessert rather than a chocolate bar. Due to it’s softer texture, there’s no snap when you break off piece after piece after piece! This delicious, melt-in-your-mouth treat is the perfect after-dinner indulgence to share with your favorite people, or hoard it in a cupboard no one checks and savor it solo!

Hogarth’s decadent (and surprisingly vegan!) Gianduia Semi-Sweet Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bar is inspired by an Italian delicacy originally made from Piemontese hazelnuts and chocolate combined into a silky smooth spread. It dates back to 1806 when Napoleon prevented British goods from entering European ports under French control, putting a strain on cocoa supplies. A chocolatier in Turin named Michele Prochet made the small amount of chocolate he had in his possession go further by mixing it with hazelnuts from his region. This confection of hazelnut paste and chocolate takes its name from Gianduja, a carnival and marionette character that represented the typical native of Piedmont.



 Karl Hogarth, the maker at Hogarth Chocolate Makers, toasts New Zealand hazelnuts in his Nelson, New Zealand factory, and grinds them together with fine flavor, ethically sourced cacao beans to craft Kiwi-style, small-batch Gianduia bars that are velvety and rich with pure hazelnut flavor.  

Karl was a sailor before he became a chocolate maker and he gives a nod to his love and respect for the sea with the design of the packaging and imprint for his beautiful bars. Each bar is sealed in a gold foil pouch, then enclosed in an exquisite and colorful envelope, all by hand and with love.
